Smaller, faster, and smarter charging

Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a type of semiconductor able to conduct high voltages of power over a longer period of time. Compared to its silicone counterpart, a GaN charger is more efficient at passing energy into devices, leading to faster processing and safer, more reliable charging.

What is Gallium Nitride (GaN)?

Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a crystalline material that is commonly used in LED technology but is fast growing in popularity for its use in chargers and adapters. GaN is a type of advanced semiconductor material used for power conversion, just like its traditional silicone counterpart.

All semiconductors have ‘band gaps’ which essentially determines how well they can conduct energy. GaN has a wider bandgap than silicon, meaning it can conduct higher voltages and power a device even faster. This wide bandgap compound also means that GaN powered devices can survive higher temperatures while still keeping its components intact. Because of this, GaN semiconductors experience less energy loss than silicone, making a GaN charger far more efficient and cost-effective.

Improved efficiency

More power means faster charging! For smartphones or other devices, the use of a GaN charger means more power can be transmitted with far higher efficiency.

Chargers made with GaN technology are smaller than silicone-based versions. This is because GaN doesn’t require as many components. It also means that a GaN charger experiences less energy loss compared to other types of chargers and can survive higher temperatures. As a result, GaN chargers and power banks are well suited for systems and devices in need of fast or all-night charging without the risk of overcharging or overheating.

Traditionally, larger devices such as laptops require bigger, bulkier chargers & adapters to meet their higher energy demands. With a GaN charger, you get a higher energy output but in a much smaller, compact charger/adapter. What does this mean for you? It means faster charging for your device with the added ease of a more transportable charger.

Benefits of GaN Chargers

With increasing dependence on tech devices at both home and the office, high power fast-charging has become a necessity. There are thousands of fast charging power banks on the market to solve this dilemma, from the Samsung FastCharge to Ubio Labs Lightning Power Bank, USB Power Delivery (PD), and so on. While these products deliver in speed and efficiency, they still all have one downside - their size. The larger charger sizes make on-the-go charging a challenge. The GaN charger is the antidote.

These efficient, slim GaN technology chargers are namely celebrated for their size and efficiency. Yet there are many more benefits to consider:

  • Small yet mighty: GaN chargers are around 40% smaller than traditional silicon chargers. But don’t let the size fool you. A GaN USB-C charger can power up any device and is two times faster than a standard 1A output.
  • Lower energy costs: The efficiency of transferring current means less energy lost to heat. This means more energy is going to your devices. As a result, you’ll find that you’ll only need the one GaN wall charger to charge all your devices.
  • Safer charging: GaN charging technology comes with built-in overcurrent and overvoltage protection. They also do a better job of charging for long periods of time without overheating. This keeps both your charger and connected devices safe.
  • Higher switching frequencies: Because GaN chargers rely on more efficient semiconductor material, it allows them to operate at higher voltages and higher switching frequencies of up to 10 times greater than silicon. This greatly improves the performance of the charger while reducing its volume, cost, and weight.

    What is a GaN charger?

A GaN charger is a charger/adapter that uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology.

GaN is an advanced alternative to silicon-containing electronics. It has proven to be more efficient and reliable when it comes to powering technology. This is because GaN is extremely conductive to electricity. A GaN charger is therefore capable of charging your devices (such as smartphones and laptops) much faster than traditional silicon-containing chargers. It also experiences less overheating and is, on the whole, a much smaller charger. So small in fact that you can take it virtually anywhere with you! This makes a GaN charger the perfect travel companion, especially when you spend multiple hours on your device and need quick charging at your convenience.

What can I use a GaN charger for?

A GaN charger can be used for all modern devices that require USB-C connectivity.

Most smart devices such as phones and laptops come with a wall charger or adapter to recharge the device as needed. These chargers are often bulky and can take a long time to fully charge a device, often getting hot before the device has even reached 100% battery.

With a GaN charger, you can charge multiple devices in a shorter amount of time. GaN chargers are lightning-fast and very compact, meaning they are easier to carry around and less intrusive when plugged into the wall or powerpoint.

GaN technology allows chargers to be smaller and deliver power much faster, resulting in efficient charging and fewer energy costs. So long as your device uses USB-C charging (and most new devices do) then you’re good to go.
